“And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”
So that no one could buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name - economic coercion becomes the enforcement mechanism of spiritual loyalty. The beast creates a closed system where survival depends on conformity to its regime.
