Joshua 7
Achan's secret transgression—taking devoted spoil from Jericho despite the ban—brings defeat at Ai and reveals that Israel is corporate, not individual; one man's sin contaminates the entire covenant community. Joshua's distress and intercession show the weight of covenantal responsibility, while the discovery and execution of Achan (along with his household, livestock, and possessions) demonstrates that covenant violation carries grave consequences and must be purged to restore the relationship. The 'trouble' (ʿākar) wrought by Achan's transgression is removed through public confession and judgment, restoring Israel's fitness for covenant blessing. The chapter warns against the 'danger of partial obedience': the Lord's instructions must be observed totally, not selectively, or the entire people suffer the consequences.
