“And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?”
One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? — Cleopas: one of the two named, the other unnamed (possibly his wife, the Mary of Clopas mentioned in John 19:25, or a male companion). The question communicates the enormity of the events — how can anyone in Jerusalem not know?

After the manifestation of Christ’s resurrection made by the Angels to the women, the same resurrection is further manifested by an appearance of Christ Himself to His disciples; as it is said, And behold two of them.
Some say that Luke was one of these two, and for this reason concealed his name.
Or to two of the disciples by themselves our Lord showed Himself in the evening, namely, Ammaon and Cleophas.
