“And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?”
He asked them, what are you discussing together as you walk along? They stood still, their faces downcast — what are you discussing: the question of the one who knows but allows them to express what they are carrying. They stood still, their faces downcast (skythrōpoi, sad, gloomy): the grief made visible in the posture and the face.

After the manifestation of Christ’s resurrection made by the Angels to the women, the same resurrection is further manifested by an appearance of Christ Himself to His disciples; as it is said, And behold two of them.
Some say that Luke was one of these two, and for this reason concealed his name.
Or to two of the disciples by themselves our Lord showed Himself in the evening, namely, Ammaon and Cleophas.
