St Theodore the Studite

Abbot of Studion, defender of the icons

Feast day: November 11

Life

Theodore was born in Constantinople to a pious family and entered monastic life under his uncle Plato at Sakkoudion in Bithynia, later succeeding him as abbot. Exiled for rebuking the emperor's unlawful marriage, he was recalled and in 798 took charge of the great Studion monastery in the capital, which under his rule grew to nearly a thousand monks and became a model of ordered communal life; his rule deeply influenced monasticism on Mount Athos and in Russia. When the iconoclast persecution revived under Leo the Armenian, Theodore led the resistance, famously organizing a procession of monks carrying icons. For this he endured imprisonment, scourging, and repeated exile, writing letters that sustained the persecuted Orthodox everywhere. His catecheses, hymns, and treatises in defense of the holy icons remain foundational. He died in exile in 826, and his relics were later returned in triumph to the Studion.
