St Nectarios of Aegina
Bishop of Pentapolis, wonderworker of Aegina
Feast day: November 9
Nectarios (Kephalas) was born to a poor family in Selybria in Thrace and worked from boyhood to support himself, later becoming a monk on Chios and studying theology in Athens. Serving in Egypt under the Patriarchate of Alexandria, he was consecrated Metropolitan of Pentapolis, but the love the people bore him aroused envy, and he was slandered and expelled without trial. He bore this injustice without bitterness for the rest of his life. In Greece he served as a humble preacher and then as dean of the Rizarios ecclesiastical school in Athens, forming a generation of clergy. In 1904 he founded the Holy Trinity Monastery for women on the island of Aegina, where he spent his final years in prayer, writing, and manual labor. Miracles of healing began at his death in 1920 and have never ceased; he is among the most beloved modern Orthodox saints.
