An angel binds Satan for a thousand years, sealing him in the bottomless pit so he cannot deceive the nations, though after that brief period he must be released for a short time—a millennium of restricted demonic activity. The martyrs and those who rejected the beast's mark come to life and reign with Christ for a thousand years in the first resurrection, while the rest of the dead do not come to life until the thousand years are completed. After the thousand years, Satan is released and deceives the nations again, gathering Gog and Magog for war against the camp of the saints and the beloved city, representing a final rebellion before the ultimate judgment. Fire comes down from heaven and consumes the rebel armies, and the devil is thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and false prophet are already tormented day and night forever and ever. The great white throne appears, and all the dead stand before it to be judged according to what they have done, while Death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire—the second death—indicating the final abolishment of all evil forces and the complete establishment of God's kingdom.
Revelation 20:1
And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain - the angel, equipped with the key to the Abyss and a great chain, prepares to bind Satan himself. The chain symbolizes restraint and divine control over the demonic realm.
Revelation 20:2
He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years - Satan, identified by his accumulated titles (dragon, ancient serpent, devil, Satan), is bound for a millennium. The thousand years represents a long but limited period; Satan's binding is not eternal but temporal.
Revelation 20:3
'He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended; after that, he must be set free for a short time' - Satan is locked in the Abyss, unable to deceive the nations during the thousand years. The binding prevents deception and allows for an era of peace; after a thousand years, he is briefly released.
Revelation 20:4
I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge; and I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony to Jesus and for the word of God - those faithful unto death are resurrected and elevated to thrones of judgment. This is a vision of the martyrs' vindication and exaltation.
Revelation 20:5
They had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands; they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years - the martyrs who refused the beast's mark are rewarded; they experience the 'first resurrection' and rule with Christ for a thousand years. This is the blessed hope of the faithful.
Revelation 20:6
'(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection; blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection; the second death has no power over them; they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years' - the first resurrection belongs only to the faithful; the second death (final judgment) has no authority over them. They are priests of God and Christ, serving in his eternal kingdom.
Revelation 20:7
When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison - after the millennium of peace and Christ's reign with the saints, Satan is briefly released. This allows a final test and revelation of the human heart's bent toward rebellion.
Revelation 20:8
and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth - Gog and Magog - and to gather them for battle; in number they are like the sand on the seashore - Satan's deception (his only remaining power) gathers the nations from all regions (Gog and Magog, from Ezekiel 38-39, represent the final anti-God powers). Their number is incalculable, suggesting the magnitude of rebellion.
Revelation 20:9
They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city he loves; but fire came down from heaven and devoured them - the armies surround God's people and the beloved city (Jerusalem, the seat of God's kingdom), but divine fire instantly consumes them. The victory is swift and total.
Revelation 20:10
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown; they will be tormented day and night for ever and ever - Satan is finally cast into the lake of fire with the beast and false prophet. The eternal torment underscores the finality of his defeat; evil has no future.
Revelation 20:11
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it; the earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them - God on his white throne (supreme judge) is so overwhelming that creation itself flees. The old creation cannot stand in his presence.
Revelation 20:12
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; another book was opened, which is the book of life; the dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books - the dead of all nations and times stand before God's judgment seat. The books record deeds; the book of life records the redeemed. Judgment is based on works (what they have done).
Revelation 20:13
The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done - all the dead, from every location and realm of existence, are raised for judgment. None escape; all must give account of their deeds.
Revelation 20:14
Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire; this is the second death, the lake of fire - death itself and the realm of the dead are cast into the lake of fire. The second death is the final separation from God, the ultimate consequence of unforgiven sin.
Revelation 20:15
'Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire' - those not written in the Lamb's book of life face the second death. Their names were not preserved from before the foundation of the world; they are consigned to eternal separation from God.
