Revelation 13

1

And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

1
2

And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

3

And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

4

And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

1
5

And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

6

And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

7

And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

8

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

9

If any man have an ear, let him hear.

10

He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

11

And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

12

And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

2
13

And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

1
14

And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

15

And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

16

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17

And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

1
18

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Revelation 13

The beast rising from the sea—with ten horns and seven heads bearing names of blasphemy—receives its power and throne from the dragon, receiving authority to reign for forty-two months. One of the beast's heads appears to have been mortally wounded yet miraculously healed, deceiving the inhabitants of the earth and causing them to worship the beast and ask, Who is like the beast, and who can wage war against it? The beast opens its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, his name, his dwelling, and those dwelling in heaven—the ultimate rebellion against divine sovereignty. The beast is given authority to wage war against the saints and conquer them, and authority over every tribe and people and language and nation, so that all who dwell on the earth worship the beast except those written in the Lamb's book of life. The beast from the earth rises to promote worship of the beast from the sea, working great signs and deceiving the inhabitants of the earth, causing all to receive a mark on their hand or forehead—666, the number of a human, which symbolizes human rebellion against God's perfection. Those without the mark cannot buy or sell, establishing total economic subjugation to the beast's system.

Revelation 13:1

The dragon stood on the shore of the sea, and I saw a beast coming out of the sea with ten horns and seven heads - the beast emerges from the sea of nations, drawing on Daniel 7's four beasts compressed into one. The ten horns and seven heads represent political powers and demonic authority arrayed against God's kingdom.

Revelation 13:2

The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion - the composite beast combines the imperial powers of Daniel's vision (leopard=Greece, bear=Media-Persia, lion=Babylon). The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority, making earthly kingship the instrument of demonic rule.

Revelation 13:3

One of the heads of the beast seemed to have a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed - one head receives a mortal wound yet is miraculously restored, perhaps reflecting a historical ruler's assassination and succession or Rome's apparent invincibility. The healed wound parodies Christ's resurrection and deepens the beast's claim to ultimate authority.

Revelation 13:4

The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast, and people worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast - the masses capitulate to political power, worshiping the source of that power (Satan) rather than resisting it. The gullibility of humanity is a recurring theme: people choose security and spectacle over truth.

Revelation 13:5

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months - the beast boasts and blasphemes, claiming what belongs to God alone. The forty-two months (three-and-a-half years) is the divinely appointed limit of persecution, beyond which Satan cannot go.

Revelation 13:6

It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven - the beast's blasphemy targets God's name (his reputation), his sanctuary (the heavenly temple), and the saints (those in heaven). This is total spiritual rebellion, an assault on all that is holy.

Revelation 13:7

It was given power to wage war against God's holy people and to conquer them, and it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation - the beast's dominion appears absolute and universal, suggesting the final empire of human rebellion. Yet 'given' authority implies a limit set by God; the beast operates only within divine permission.

Revelation 13:8

All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast - all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world - the Lamb's death is cosmic and eternal, prefigured before time and actualized in history. Only those written in the book of life resist the beast's seduction.

Revelation 13:9

Whoever has ears, let them hear - this call to attention, repeated throughout Revelation, summons believers to faithful discernment amid the deceptions of empire. Hearing the word requires both spiritual sensitivity and the courage to resist worldly conformity.

Revelation 13:10

If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go; if anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword they will be killed - this verse calls for patient endurance and faithful resistance among the saints, echoing Jeremiah's call to acceptance of exile. Believers are called not to violent retaliation but to steadfast testimony even unto death.

Revelation 13:11

Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon - the earth-beast is the false prophet, with lamb-like appearance (imitating Christ) but dragon-like speech (speaking lies). The two horns suggest religious authority and deceptive claims to gentleness.

Revelation 13:12

It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed - the false prophet serves as the propaganda arm of political power, promoting worship of the beast-state. Religious deception becomes the handmaid of political tyranny.

Revelation 13:13

And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people - the false prophet mimics the miracles of Elijah and the true prophets, creating a counterfeit spirituality. These lying wonders seduce the masses into accepting the beast's rule as divinely sanctioned.

Revelation 13:14

Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth - deception through false miracles becomes the mechanism of mass control. The earth's inhabitants, bereft of wisdom and discernment, capitulate to spectacle and wonders rather than truth.

Revelation 13:15

The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed - the image of the beast represents the cult of the state, a demand for absolute loyalty expressed through worship and the suppression of dissent. Refusal to worship means refusal to live under the beast's system.

Revelation 13:16

It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads - the mark controls economic life and identifies allegiance. The mark on the hand (work) and forehead (loyalty) signal total submission of action and thought to the beast's system.

Revelation 13:17

So that no one could buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name - economic coercion becomes the enforcement mechanism of spiritual loyalty. The beast creates a closed system where survival depends on conformity to its regime.

Revelation 13:18

This calls for wisdom: Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a human, 666 - the number 666 (anthropos arithmos, the number of a human) likely uses gematria to encode a ruler's name, perhaps Nero or a typological anti-Christ. Six falls short of seven (perfection), so 666 is the ultimate human failure: the throne of humanity without God.
