Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,

Yet for love’s sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

Philemon 1:7

“For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.”

Study Summary

For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you — Paul's emotional response (splanchnai = bowels/heart metaphorically) to Philemon's love demonstrates the relational foundation of the letter. The saints' hearts (splanchnoi tōn hagiōn) being refreshed (anapaō) through Philemon's ministry establishes his reputation for Christian kindness. The armor of God — Philemon 1

God is faithful in every circumstance.. The early church would have heard this very differently than we do today. My grandmother used to quote this verse every morning. The promise here is not conditional on our strength but on His character.. I think this is a call to trust beyond what we can see. There's something deeply comforting about knowing that the same God who spoke these words is the same yesterday, today, and forever.. The thread of covenant runs through every book of the Bible.. Faith isn't the absence of doubt — it's choosing to believe despite it.. The thread of covenant runs through every book of the Bible.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. God's sovereignty revealed — Philemon 1

God is faithful in every circumstance.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. We bring nothing; He provides everything.. It implies covenant loyalty, steadfast love that never wavers.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. My grandmother used to quote this verse every morning. God is faithful in every circumstance.. His timing, His methods, His purposes — all beyond our comprehension, yet perfectly good.. My grandmother used to quote this verse every morning. The imagery here is agricultural — the original audience would have immediately understood the metaphor of sowing, waiting, and harvesting.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. Reading the Psalms alongside this gives a fuller picture of what the author was experiencing — both the anguish and the hope.. God is faithful in every circumstance..
