Jonah 2

1

Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly,

1
2

And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

3
3

For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

2
4

Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

2
1
5

The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

2
6

I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.

7

When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

1
8

They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

1
9

But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.

1
1
10

And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

“For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.”

Study Summary

The description of being cast into the deep, the seas surrounding, and the weeds wrapping around the head indicates the terrifying experience of near-drowning. The imagery of overwhelming waters suggests complete vulnerability.

Strength in weakness — Jonah 2

This connects directly to the promise made to Abraham. God is faithful in every circumstance.. The promise here is not conditional on our strength but on His character.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. The imagery here is agricultural — the original audience would have immediately understood the metaphor of sowing, waiting, and harvesting.. This connects directly to the promise made to Abraham. Faith isn't the absence of doubt — it's choosing to believe despite it.. It implies covenant loyalty, steadfast love that never wavers.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. Following God is costly, but the reward is eternal.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. When we read this alongside the surrounding chapters, the narrative arc becomes clear: God is always working redemption, even in the darkest moments.. What a reminder that God's ways are not our ways. God is faithful in every circumstance.. When we read this alongside…

Walking by faith — Jonah 2

God meets us exactly where we are — broken, uncertain, yet chosen. Faith isn't the absence of doubt — it's choosing to believe despite it.. My grandmother used to quote this verse every morning. God is faithful in every circumstance.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. There's something deeply comforting about knowing that the same God who spoke these words is the same yesterday, today, and forever.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. The promise here is not conditional on our strength but on His character.. His timing, His methods, His purposes — all beyond our comprehension, yet perfectly good.. Reading the Psalms alongside this gives a fuller picture of what the author was experiencing — both the anguish and the hope.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. God is faithful in every circumstance.. There's something deeply comforting about knowing that the same God…
