Before You Read

Jesus heals a man born blind on the Sabbath; interrogated and expelled by the Pharisees, the man comes to full faith and worships Jesus.

The sixth sign dramatizes the light-of-the-world claim of chapter 8 and deepens the breach with the Pharisees.

Chrysostom

Mystically, our Lord, after being banished from the minds of the Jews, passed over to the Gentiles. The passage or journey here is His descent from heaven to earth, where He saw the blind man, i.e. looked with compassion on the human race.
