For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Loving God and holding fast to him is described as choosing life. It's described as gaining years. It's described as inheriting the promise. The connection is clear: devotion to God is what makes life possible. What makes flourishing possible. What extends your days. Not in some magical way, but in a practical way. If you love God, you're less likely to make self-destructive choices. You're less likely to isolate yourself. You're less likely to give up. You're less likely to surrender to despair. I think about people I've known who loved God deeply and lived long and full lives. And I think about people who abandoned faith and seemed to age in a different way, seemed to harden, seemed to shrivel. I'm not saying faithful people never die. I'm saying the person who holds fast to God tends to hold fast to life in all its dimensions.
