David is old and near death, and he's reflecting on his life and his relationship with God. He says: 'I know, my God, that you examine the heart and you are pleased with integrity.' This is the God who sees beyond what's visible. Not just actions, but the condition of the heart behind those actions.
I've spent a lot of my life managing perception. Making sure I look good, sound good, appear to be doing the right things. And this verse quietly suggests that's a waste of energy because God isn't fooled by any of it. He's testing the heart - examining motives, examining whether you're actually integrating your beliefs with your behavior, whether you're the same person alone and in public.
I'm starting to care less about whether people think I'm good and more about whether I'm actually becoming good. That's a shift that only happens when you really believe in a God who tests the heart and delights in integrity. You can't fake it with Him, so you might as well be real with yourself about who you actually are.
