Jesus replied, 'Isaiah was right about you hypocrites; as it is written: These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.'
Honoring God with lips while hearts are far—that's a distinction between external performance and internal reality. And then the phrase that hits: 'their teachings are merely human rules.' The Pharisees had built an entire system claiming it was God's will, but it was human construct. I think about the traditions I've absorbed without question. The ways I've been taught to worship that might actually distance me from God rather than draw me closer. What human rules have I mistaken for divine law?
