God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth. This comes in response to a woman asking whether to worship on the mountain or in Jerusalem.
Jesus is saying the location doesn't matter. God isn't confined to temples or holy places. You can worship anywhere if you worship in Spirit (authentically, with your whole being) and in truth (honestly, not pretending). That's radically freeing. You don't need the right building or the right ritual. You need honesty and presence. I've had the most real encounters with God not in churches but in moments of desperate honesty—confession, grief, joy—wherever I've been.
