I'm an environmental activist, and I read this with a particular poignancy: the devil comes down to earth in great wrath, knowing his time is short.
We're seeing it. The last gasps of extraction. The desperation of systems that know they're dying but are extracting everything they can on the way down. The wrath against the created world.
But John also says the devil's time is short. The trajectory doesn't lead to his victory. So I'm not despairing, but I'm urgent. Yes, woe to the earth. But not forever.
I'm teaching the next generation that environmental work is spiritual work. That resisting the desecration of earth is resisting Satan's wrath. And that while things are dire, they're not hopeless.
