The Lord created me at the beginning of his works, the oldest of his acts of old. Wisdom is speaking in this passage, and she's claiming a place in creation itself. Before the earth, before the mountains, before the seas, wisdom was there. She was present when God made the world. She delights in the human race.
What a profound image. Wisdom isn't something humans invented. It's not a skill we develop. It's woven into the very fabric of creation. It's been there from the beginning, present when God spoke the world into being. And it's available to us. We can align ourselves with the wisdom that ordered creation itself.
I think about the contrast with modern knowledge. We have information overload, access to more facts than any previous generation. But wisdom? Wisdom is harder to find. Wisdom is knowing how to live well, how to work with the grain of the universe rather than against it. And this passage suggests that wisdom is ancient, patient, waiting for us to seek her. She's been there all along. We just have to learn to listen.
