On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus's mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus's mother said to him, 'They have no wine.' Jesus said, 'Woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come.' Yet Jesus tells the servants to fill jars with water, which becomes wine.
Jesus's first miracle is the seemingly smallest one—making wine for a party that's already happened. Not healing or feeding. Not even particularly necessary. But Jesus attends to the joy and the celebration. He makes sure the party continues well. I think about my tendency to spiritualize everything, to insist that faith should be serious. But Jesus shows up at weddings. He cares about celebration. He makes sure the wine is excellent.
