The prophet asks: what does God want from you? Justice, mercy, humility. Not sacrifice, not gifts, not religious performance. Just to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.
It's breathtakingly simple and impossibly difficult. Justice requires confronting systems of oppression. Mercy requires releasing grudges I've been nursing. Humility requires admitting I don't have it figured out. All three, simultaneously, as a way of life.
This verse is my north star. When I'm confused about whether I'm living faithfully, I ask: am I doing justice? Am I loving mercy? Am I walking humbly? If I'm failing at any of those, I'm off track.
