John writes to his dear friend Gaius. I pray that in all respects you are prospering and are in good health, just as your soul is prospering.
It's a tiny letter, but it shows something essential about spiritual friendship. John doesn't separate material wellbeing from spiritual wellbeing. He prays for both. He's concerned about Gaius's health, his circumstances, his soul. These things are connected. You can't be spiritually well if you're being destroyed physically.
Then John says his greatest joy is hearing that his children are walking in the truth. Not just believing the truth, but walking in it. Truth is embodied. It moves through life. It shows up in how you treat people.
