When a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
Words matter. Vows create obligation. When you say something before God, you're speaking reality into existence. You can't just unsay it because circumstances changed or you feel different now.
I'm in recovery for addiction, and my sponsor has taught me about the power of words. When I say "I won't use," I'm creating a commitment. When I say "I will be honest," I'm stating a reality about who I'm choosing to be.
So many of us treat our words as tentative. I'll try. I think so. Maybe. We're non-committal because we're afraid we can't follow through. But Moses is saying: when you speak, you're creating obligation. Honor that.
I've been working on my words. Being more careful about what I commit to. Only saying yes when I mean yes. Not making promises I don't intend to keep. Not saying I love something when I'm lukewarm.
It's hard because commitment is risky. You might fail. But the alternative is to live in a kind of floating place where nothing means anything because you haven't really committed to anything.
God takes our words seriously. That's not harsh - it's honoring. It means when you commit, it matters. When you say yes, you're creating something real. That's both terrifying and beautiful.
