In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. Daniel is reading Jeremiah's prophecy and suddenly understanding its meaning in his present moment. He's not passive about his circumstances. He actively seeks to understand what God is saying.
There's something powerful about taking Scripture seriously enough to wrestle with it, to look for how God is speaking through the ancient words to your current situation. Daniel isn't just reading history. He's reading prophecy. He's asking: what is God telling me through what Jeremiah said?
Then Daniel does something remarkable. He begins to fast and pray, confessing the sins of his people. He's not making excuses. He's not saying this punishment is unfair. He's taking responsibility and seeking God's intervention. It's a model of spiritual maturity: understanding what Scripture says, taking responsibility for the past, and asking God for a future.
