I grew up in a charismatic church where the Spirit was supposed to just move you, transform you, give you power. I waited for the Spirit to make me better. It didn't happen.
Paul talks about training, like godliness is something you develop through practice. That's athletic language - you don't get strong by dreaming about exercise. You train. You put in the hours.
I started treating my spiritual life like I treat my running - consistent practice, small improvements, showing up even when I don't feel like it. Prayer every morning. Actually reading Scripture. Serving people when it's inconvenient. Repenting when I mess up. After a couple of years, I'm not transformed, but I'm more decent. I'm more patient. I'm less reactive. The training works.
