Jesus acknowledges the Smyrnaean church's affliction and poverty, though they're rich spiritually. He warns them that they're about to face more suffering, prison, testing. But they should be faithful even unto death, and they will receive the crown of life.
This isn't theoretical. Smyrna was a wealthy city, and the church was poor. They were facing active persecution. Jesus isn't asking them to just endure. He's promising them resurrection and a crown. Death isn't the end.
The promise 'to him who overcomes I will give the crown of life' reframes victory. In the world's terms, they're being destroyed. In Christ's terms, they're being crowned. The crowning happens not before suffering but through it.
