Jesus commends Pergamum for holding to his name even where Satan's throne is. But he has complaints. Some hold the teaching of Balaam and the Nicolaitans, who entice believers to sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols.
Pergamum is doing well in resistance but failing in purity. They're maintaining their faith identity while compromising their moral identity. Jesus says repent, or I'll come against them with the sword of my mouth.
To the overcomer, I'll give hidden manna and a white stone with a new name. The manna represents secret provision. The white stone represents acquittal and acceptance. Jesus is promising intimacy with himself and vindication before God. That's the reward for refusing to compromise even in a hostile environment.
