Jesus addresses Laodicea, the lukewarm church. You say 'I am rich, I have acquired wealth,' but you don't realize you're wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. They have a prosperity gospel but no actual vitality.
Jesus offers them gold refined in fire, white clothes, and salve for their eyes. The price is high: repentance and return to him. The offer is generous: he stands at the door and knocks. If anyone hears his voice and opens the door, he'll come in and eat with them.
The image of Jesus knocking on a door of a church is striking. He's outside his own church. They've locked him out through complacency. But he's still inviting. Still offering. Still patient. The overcomer will sit with him on his throne. Co-rulership is available to those who repent.
