This verse describes people being tortured but refusing to accept deliverance if it meant betraying their faith. That's the other side of the faith hall of fame - not victory, but faithfulness unto death.
I'm a pastor in a persecution context and I live with the knowledge that could be me someday. The verse isn't romantic about it. These people aren't heroes because suffering is good. They're heroes because they valued something more than their own survival.
It clarifies my own choices. What do I actually believe enough to suffer for? That question doesn't require an answer today, but knowing the answer changes how I live now.
