See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. Jesus ascribes cosmic significance to children.
Each child has an angel gazing on the face of God. Each child is watched over by heaven itself. That's not sentimental. It's a claim about how much heaven cares about the vulnerable. How dispensable we think children are, how easily we harm them. Jesus is saying: stop. You're harming what heaven treasures most.
