John sees a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She's pregnant and cries out in pain as she's about to give birth.
Then John sees an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns. His tail sweeps a third of the stars out of the sky and throws them to the earth. The dragon stands in front of the woman as she's about to give birth, ready to devour her child.
She gives birth to a son, a male child who will rule all nations with an iron scepter. Immediately the child is snatched up to God and to his throne. The woman flees into the wilderness where a place has been prepared for her.
The woman is the church. The dragon is Satan. The child is Christ. The snatching away represents Christ's resurrection and ascension. The woman's flight represents the church's protection in the wilderness of persecution.
