For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. I'm a philosopher, trained to value rationality and logical coherence. The gospel violates both. God dying to save people he could have saved another way? A resurrection that defies physics? Forgiveness without retribution? It sounds absurd.
But I've watched people transformed by this 'foolishness.' People freed from addiction. People reconciled to family members they'd hated. People finding meaning in suffering. The cross, which I thought was Christianity's weakness, turns out to be its power. Not because it makes rational sense, but because it works at a depth reason can't reach.
I'm learning that the cross is the subversion of all human wisdom systems. Power through weakness. Death to gain life. Forgiveness instead of justice. These aren't just theological principles. They're the operating system of God's kingdom, and they run counter to everything the world teaches. I'm beginning to think my education was preparation to recognize when I'm being conned, not preparation to understand God. Maybe that's the point.
