Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors. Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. The wilderness wasn't just a punishment for the generation that didn't believe. It was a school. It was the place where hearts were tested and revealed. The wilderness is where you discover who you are when everything is stripped away. I went on a six-month solo travel adventure after my divorce. I wasn't fleeing so much as discovering. When you're in unfamiliar places, without your usual structures and supports, your real self emerges. I learned that I was braver than I thought. I also learned that I was more fearful than I'd admitted to myself. The wilderness reveals. That's its gift. That's why the desert season of faith matters. Not because God is punishing you, but because the desert is where you become acquainted with your actual heart.
