The flood waters prevailed over the earth for one hundred and fifty days. The text lingers on the duration - not a brief event, but months of rising waters covering everything.
Climate scientists use this passage to understand ancient flooding patterns. But theologically, the duration matters too. Judgment isn't instantaneous. It's relentless. The waters keep rising. And they keep rising. That's terrifying and also more realistic than sudden punishment.
When I'm in crisis, sometimes the crisis is the rising water - it doesn't spike and resolve, it just keeps coming. This verse has taught me to prepare for duration, not just intensity.
