John turns and sees seven golden lampstands and among them someone like the Son of Man. He's clothed in a robe, with a golden belt, hair white as snow, eyes like blazing fire, feet like bronze glowing in a furnace, face shining like the sun.
This isn't the Jesus of the Gospels. This is the risen Christ in his glory and authority. The description is overwhelming. John falls at his feet as if dead. Then Jesus touches him and says 'Do not be afraid.'
The contrast is essential. The overwhelming appearance would terrify anyone. But the touch and the words redirect fear. You can't stand before this being unprotected. But you're not unprotected. He's speaking to you. That changes everything.
