I looked and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north, a great cloud with raging fire and brilliant light around it. The creatures in the cloud had the faces of a human, a lion, an ox, and an eagle. Their wings were straight and raised upward. It's one of the strangest, most difficult passages in all of Scripture, almost overwhelming in its strangeness.
Ezekiel is a priest trying to describe what he's encountered in the spiritual realm. The creatures are perfectly coordinated, moved by the Spirit in unified motion. The whole image conveys movement, complexity, integration. Everything is connected. Everything moves together.
I think Ezekiel is trying to convey that the universe is stranger and more wonderful than our normal perception allows us to see. There's a level of reality operating alongside the everyday world. It's moving toward a purpose that we only catch glimpses of. The vision is meant to shatter our comfortable assumptions and remind us that we live in a cosmos far vaster and more mysterious than we typically imagine.
