John tells us that everyone born of God overcomes the world. That victory is through faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
I notice the victory isn't escape. You don't leave the world. You overcome it while inhabiting it. The world runs on one set of values: wealth, power, status, pleasure, independence. Faith runs on another set: love, service, sacrifice, surrender. When you're living by faith, you're not playing the world's game. You've changed the metric for success.
John's writing to people living in hostility. They need to know that faithfulness to Christ is winning, even when it doesn't look like it by earthly standards. The world says the rich person won. Faith says the obedient person won. Those are irreconcilable definitions. You have to choose which world you're living in.
