The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley, it was full of bones. Ezekiel looks at the valley of death and sees only skeletons. But God asks him a question: Can these bones live? And Ezekiel responds: Sovereign Lord, only you know.
Then Ezekiel prophesies, and the bones come together. Sinews form, flesh develops, skin covers them. But they're still dead. Then breath comes into them and they stand up, a great army. It's a vision of resurrection on a massive scale. A valley that was hopeless becomes teeming with life.
The Israelites were exiles, watching their nation fall apart. This vision was meant to tell them: it's not over. What you see as dead, God can resurrect. What looks like defeat, God can transform into a new beginning. It's a vision for anyone who feels destroyed by circumstance, that life returns where there was only death.
