John is given a measuring rod and told to measure the temple of God and the altar, counting those who worship there. But exclude the outer court because it's been given to the Gentiles, who will trample the holy city for forty-two months.
John also sees two witnesses given power to prophesy for twelve hundred sixty days. They have power to strike the earth with plagues. When they've finished their testimony, the beast from the Abyss attacks them, kills them, and leaves their bodies in the main street of the great city.
People from every people, tribe, language, and nation gaze on their bodies for three and a half days. But then breath enters them, they stand up, and they're taken to heaven in clouds. An earthquake kills seven thousand people.
The witnesses represent faithful testimony even unto death. Their death isn't defeat. It's the catalyst for their vindication. They're raised and taken to heaven before those watching. Their enemies see it.
