Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel. He said to them: I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to go out and come in. Moses is at the end. He can no longer lead. He won't physically go out to battle anymore. He won't bring in the conquest. But he doesn't just disappear. He makes his final address. He commissions Joshua publicly. He ensures the people understand who will lead them next. He speaks words of encouragement. He doesn't cling to power. He doesn't make it difficult for his successor. He makes it clear: I'm done, Joshua is now leading, and you need to follow him. I think about leaders who can't let go. Who hang on past their usefulness. Who make it impossible for the next generation to fully take authority because they're still occupying the space. Moses knows when it's time. He says the hard thing: I can't do this anymore. And then he does what can still be done: he speaks and encourages and blesses.
