If you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving, you offer it with unleavened cakes mixed with oil, unleavened wafers spread with oil, and cakes of fine flour mixed with oil. The thankfulness is expressed through specific, thoughtful preparation.
Thankfulness is often treated as just an attitude - you feel grateful, and that's enough. But the thanksgiving offering requires action. You prepare food, you bring specific materials, you participate actively in expressing gratitude.
I started keeping a thanksgiving practice - not just internal gratitude, but actual actions that express it. Writing thank-you notes, preparing a special meal for someone, spending time I could use productively to express appreciation. The deliberate action changes something.
