When the Lamb opens the fifth seal, John sees the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God. They cry out with a loud voice: 'How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?'
They're given white robes and told to wait a little longer until the number of fellow servants and brothers and sisters who were to be killed as they had been was completed. The request is heartbreaking. The answer acknowledges their cry but tells them to wait.
What moves me is that their worship in heaven doesn't erase their loss. They remember their suffering. They seek justice. But they're told their longing will be fulfilled. The count matters. The final seal won't come until the number is complete.
