This might be the most convicting verse in all of Scripture because it doesn't allow for the innocence of ignorance. If you know what is right and don't do it, that's sin. Period. Not weakness. Not struggle. Sin.
I've spent years studying the Bible. I know generosity is right. I know patience is right. I know hospitality is right. James says my knowledge creates obligation. The more I read Scripture, the heavier the weight becomes because I can't claim I didn't know.
It's almost better to be ignorant in some ways. At least then you have an excuse. But James doesn't let knowledge be a luxury item. It's a responsibility. What you know becomes what you owe.
