Jesus told his disciples: 'There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. So he called him in and asked him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you are not able to manage any longer.'
The manager then cooks the books to help the rich man's debtors reduce what they owe, so they'll owe him favors later. Jesus commends the manager's shrewdness—not his dishonesty but his clear-eyed use of what he had to secure his future. He's telling disciples to be that shrewd about spiritual reality.
