For the sin offering, if someone can't afford even a bird, they can bring two handfuls of fine flour. The sacrifice is scaled to what the person can actually bear.
I've been in congregations that shame people for not tithing, not understanding that some families literally cannot afford a tithe without putting children at risk. But Leviticus says God understands graduated sacrifice. What matters is that you bring what you can.
I'm teaching my church to rethink generosity as proportional, not flat-rate. A widow's small offering can be more sacrificial than a wealthy person's large gift. God understands economics.
