The Lord said to Moses: Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff. Write Aaron's name on the Levite staff, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. Place them in the Tent of Testimony in front of the ark of the covenant, where I meet with you. The one whose staff sprouts will be the man I have chosen. The conflict about leadership is settled not by debate or voting but by a supernatural act. God chooses, and the choosing is made undeniable: one staff sprouts, and the others don't. Aaron's staff doesn't just bloom; it produces almonds and buds and flowers. The sign is unmistakable. I think about how many conflicts we settle through our own mechanisms: majority vote, seniority, credentials. Those are helpful, but they don't settle the deepest question: who has the spiritual authority? Who is actually called by God? There are moments when we need a blooming staff. We need something that transcends our normal ways of deciding. We need clarity that comes from somewhere beyond human committee.
