John opens by establishing what this book is: the revelation of Jesus Christ. Not a puzzle to decode, though it has symbolism. Not a chart of the future, though it has prophecy. It's a revealing of who Jesus is in the midst of suffering.
God gave it to show his servants what must soon take place. The word 'soon' in Revelation has troubled readers for two thousand years. But perhaps the point isn't timeline precision. It's urgency. These things matter. They're coming. Pay attention.
John adds that blessed is the one who reads this prophecy and those who hear it and keep what is written. Not blessed if they solve all the symbolic puzzles. Blessed if they hear, understand, and live according to what they understand. The book's not primarily informational. It's transformational.
