When someone offers a grain offering, the person shall take a handful of the fine flour and oil, with all the frankincense, and the priest shall turn this memorial portion into smoke on the altar. A memorial before the Lord.
Most discussions of Leviticus focus on animal sacrifice, but here's a whole category of offering for people who can't afford animals. A handful of flour, oil, and incense. That's what a poor household could bring. And God values it the same way.
I think about that constantly in ministry to low-income communities. There's an implicit message in our churches that substantial giving means money - build the building fund, support the missions program. But a handful of flour, offered faithfully, is equally valued in God's sight. That changes how I understand what my poorest parishioners are actually giving through their presence and prayer.
