We read all these verses about 'God hardened Pharaoh's heart' and argue about determinism versus free will. But then you hit verse 15 and see Pharaoh himself hardening his heart - his choice, his agency.
My pastor made an observation that shifted how I read this: maybe God hardening the heart meant reinforcing the choice Pharaoh was already making. The man wanted power and control. Every time judgment eased, his pride resurfaced. He kept choosing his own way. God simply allowed him to fully experience the consequences of that choice, deepened his commitment to it.
I think about this with my nephew who's in addiction. At some point, refusing help hardens you. Your capacity to accept mercy actually atrophies. That's not God being punitive - that's how resistance works when sustained long enough. You become a slave to your own defiance.
