I'm a military chaplain, and I've seen soldiers die believing in causes that weren't worthy of their sacrifice. I've seen empires declare themselves righteous when they were corrupt.
John is writing to people in the military too - soldiers in the Roman legions who are following Jesus. And he tells them: the Lamb will overcome. Not through military strategy. Not through superior weaponry. But because the Lamb is Lord of lords.
I tell soldiers today the same thing. You can serve your country. But you ultimately answer to a King higher than any king on earth. That changes everything about what you're willing to do.
Some of the best witnesses to Christ I know are military people who've learned that allegiance distinction. They can serve with integrity while knowing their ultimate loyalty is elsewhere.
