Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab and camped along the Jordan across from Jericho. Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. Balak is afraid. He can see that Israel is unstoppable. They've defeated everyone they've encountered. So he does what any frightened leader does: he tries to hire a prophet to curse them. He wants God's power on his side. He wants to use spiritual power as a military weapon. The entire story of Balaam is about what happens when you try to weaponize the sacred. Balak offers money. He offers status. He offers whatever Balaam wants. But Balaam's power comes from God, not from Balak's coffers. You can't buy prophecy. You can't hire holiness. You can't pay for authentic spiritual authority. I've seen this attempted in churches: the person with money trying to direct the ministry. The powerful person trying to make the pastor say what they want. The wealthy donor expecting the prophet to bless their choices. And it always ends badly because you cannot purchase spiritual authority. It's not for sale.
