A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, 'Send us among the pigs, allow us to go into them.' He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
It's a weird story. Demons request to go into pigs. Jesus allows it. The pigs drown. The people are upset about losing the pigs. Some see this as Jesus destroying property. I wonder if there's more—the demon-possessed man is freed at the cost of the herd. What's the value exchange? Human freedom costs an economic loss. That's the choice the community faces and apparently resents.
